“Sulfate-free” is on more and more shampoo bottles, and for good reason. If your hair is frizzy, coloured or keratin-treated, it is one of the simplest changes you can make for healthier-looking hair.
What are sulfates?
Sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), are strong cleansing agents that create a rich lather. They are very good at removing oil and dirt, but they can also remove the natural oils your hair needs to stay soft and protected.
Why skip them?
For frizzy and dry hair
Stripping natural oils leaves the hair cuticle rough and open, which shows up as frizz and dullness. A gentler cleanser helps hair keep its moisture.
For colour-treated hair
Harsh cleansing can make hair colour fade faster. Sulfate-free formulas are kinder to coloured hair.
For keratin-treated hair
After a keratin or smoothening treatment, sulfates and salt can wash out the treatment sooner. Salon professionals almost always recommend sulfate-free aftercare.
Will a sulfate-free shampoo still clean my hair?
Yes. Sulfate-free shampoos use milder cleansing agents that remove dirt and excess oil gently. They may lather a little less, but less foam does not mean less clean. Massage the shampoo into your scalp for 1 to 2 minutes and rinse well.
What else to look for
- No parabens and no added salt for a gentler formula overall.
- Keratin and proteins such as wheat protein to strengthen and smooth.
- Nourishing oils such as argan oil to soften and add shine.
Every Kerasis shampoo is free from sulfates, parabens and salt, and enriched with keratin, argan oil and wheat protein.
